Phase 2 of 3 · Hire, Land, Keep

Retention check-in

A short, scheduled conversation that asks how the work is going before a good person starts job hunting.

Ask while they will still tell you, not after they have a new offer.

In plain English

A retention check-in is a regular, short talk about the job, the load, and what would make someone stay, held before the resignation letter.

What it looks like in business
Once a month the owner asks what is in the way, what is working, and whether pay or hours still match the deal, then writes one action.
Why it matters
In a small team, one unexplained departure is a hole in the schedule and a rumor, and surprise exits are usually preceded by silence.

Reading it once is not the same as knowing it. Put this term in the daily rotation and let the quiz come back for it.

Where this comes from

EEOC Small Business

This is HR guidance, not legal advice, and rules change. Check the current text and your own facts before you act on it. When a situation needs a lawyer, Jennifer will say so.

A worn key board beside an open bay door holds a row of old brass keys and one bright new key on a clean tag, late sun raking across them, DFW.

Phase 2: Hire, Land, Keep

A repeatable path from a vague vacancy to a person who is still good at day 90, with the live record checked before day one.

Hire well and keep people past the 90 day cliff

Knowing the term is the easy half.

Knowing whether it applies to your eight people, on your payroll, this week, is the part owners call about.
