HR Pursuit

Phase 1 of 3 · Legal Hygiene

Texas Minimum Wage Act

Texas sets a state minimum wage tied to the federal rate and limits local governments from requiring a higher private employer minimum wage.

Start with hours and pay, then prove any credit or exemption instead of assuming it.

In plain English

Covered Texas workers must receive at least the applicable minimum hourly wage, subject to lawful credits, exemptions, and federal protections.

What it looks like in business
Payroll checks whether a tipped employee, trainee, student worker, or other special category satisfies every condition before applying a lower cash wage or exemption.
Why it matters
Calling someone salaried, contract labor, or a trainee does not by itself remove minimum wage duties.

Reading it once is not the same as knowing it. Put this term in the daily rotation and let the quiz come back for it.

Where this comes from

Tex. Lab. Code Ch. 62

This is HR guidance, not legal advice, and rules change. Check the current text and your own facts before you act on it. When a situation needs a lawyer, Jennifer will say so.

A gray steel filing drawer stands half open under a warm desk lamp, blank folder tabs in a neat row and one folder lifted just above the rest, DFW.
