HR Pursuit

Phase 1 of 3 · Legal Hygiene

Paid time off

Vacation, sick and personal leave that Texas never requires a private employer to give, so whatever the handbook promises becomes the rule the state enforces.

The state sets no floor. Your own handbook sets one for you.

In plain English

Texas requires no private employer to offer vacation, sick days, or holidays, so any paid leave a small business gives is a promise it wrote itself.

What it looks like in business
A handbook says unused vacation is paid out at separation. That sentence turns the payout into wages the state will enforce on the final check.
Why it matters
Silence leaves an owner free, and a written policy binds them, which makes the handbook wording the whole decision.

Where this comes from

TWC, Texas Payday Law

This is HR guidance, not legal advice, and rules change. Check the current text and your own facts before you act on it. When a situation needs a lawyer, Jennifer will say so.

A gray steel filing drawer stands half open under a warm desk lamp, blank folder tabs in a neat row and one folder lifted just above the rest, DFW.

Phase 1: Legal Hygiene

Stay legal without becoming a lawyer: the Texas and federal rules that still apply when the owner is the HR department.
