Phase 3 of 3 · Hard Conversations

Performance improvement plan / PIP

A dated written notice that names the gap, the standard to be met, the help on offer, and what happens if the deadline passes unmet.

Name the number, the help, and the date. All three or none.

In plain English

A performance improvement plan is a dated written notice naming the gap, the standard to be met, the support offered, and the date the employer will look again.

What it looks like in business
A good plan says calls answered within two rings, reviewed weekly for thirty days, with a named coach. A plan that says improve your attitude gives nobody anything to measure.
Why it matters
A vague plan reads as a paper trail built to justify a decision already made, and a measurable one reads as a genuine chance.

Reading it once is not the same as knowing it. Put this term in the daily rotation and let the quiz come back for it.

EEOC Small Business

This is HR guidance, not legal advice, and rules change. Check the current text and your own facts before you act on it. When a situation needs a lawyer, Jennifer will say so.

Phase 3: Hard Conversations

A fair process for performance, complaints, accommodations, and exits so the owner is not both the boss and the only adult in the room.

Knowing the term is the easy half.

Knowing whether it applies to your eight people, on your payroll, this week, is the part owners call about.
